When experience becomes a liability

Experience is often treated as an unquestionable advantage. But in fast-changing environments, experience can quietly turn into a constraint.

The hidden skill is cognitive flexibility: the ability to update one’s thinking even when past success suggests otherwise.

Experienced professionals carry mental shortcuts formed by years of repetition. These shortcuts once saved time, but over time they harden into assumptions. When conditions change, those assumptions remain, even when evidence says they should not.
