What is working silo? Do these “baffles” really make companies improve their performance? Or is this just a hurdle for HR to grow in every organization?
1. Silo working: Name a model "everyone's house lights on"
The working silo is inspired by the image of working rooms separated by partitions. Corresponding to a silo is a separate department, different positions and independent positions. It is also called independent because these silos have created a culture of “everyone doing what they do”. Each employee only focuses on the specialization of each job.
Once upon a time, “workrooms” became the model for all organizations of the time. For large organizations with a scale of up to thousands of employees, working silo is almost considered as an "operational guideline". This is to contribute to getting the job and personnel on track quickly. The larger the organization size, the more silos. Each employee only needs to focus on doing "the right thing to do", "knowing the right thing to do" and that's it.
2. Silo working: potential "cracks" in the organization
The COVID-19 pandemic appeared like a fatal blow to many businesses. In the face of adversity, flexibility is key for organizations to survive and navigate turbulent times. At this time, the Silo working model has gradually revealed important "death points". Specifically, the biggest weakness lies in the cumbersome management apparatus of organizations.
2.1 Information that is not communicated in a timely manner leads to delayed actions
Since everything is hierarchical according to the board, all information is also communicated "in a process". This easily causes information "congestion", making the problem not handled in time.
2.2 All information is not shared publicly making all communication less transparent
Silo working is operated with the motto "everyone does what, everyone's lights are on". Any job-related information is not shared publicly between individuals.
Because of this, it is easy to cause misunderstandings in working relationships between individuals in the organization.
2.3 What everyone does makes all efforts to cooperate ineffective
Silo working really makes people lack of updating each other on the common work progress. The cooperation from here also becomes less effective.
No one knows the progress & status of each other's work, so they cannot support each other in time.
2.4 “None of my business” leads to a lack of support – working together
When everyone only focuses on their own work, they will not care about the affairs of those around them.
2.5 The “bulky” working model leads to a decrease in work efficiency
According to a report from Work Front on labor situation, 84% of employees admit to being disgusted with the Silo working model. They argue that the organization has missed a lot of "golden opportunities" just because it did not change its working model to adapt to the situation. This has caused the "inhibition" of each individual. Invisibly, long-term work efficiency is also reduced.
3. Outside the walls are always new opportunities waiting for you
Standing on the threshold of changes, employees always have 2 options. Or we continue to "swallow sweet soap" behind the walls. We step out of the 4 walls to find ourselves a more suitable job.
The future of a digital economy lies in a generation of workers with an open mind. We dare to do, dare to change to contribute to creating positive values for society. I just need to dare to step out of my comfort zone to reach for new opportunities.
